Artist Statement
My work is an assessment of identity. It explores the process of becoming, feelings of doubt and alienation, but also beauty and resilience. The development of self is a gradual process based on learning and unlearning, changing, and growing. A figure of this process explores the tension in dualisms like being and object, natural and constructed, and presence and absence.
My most recent work focuses on soft sculptures comprised of natural materials such as branches and leaves – a metaphorical interpretation of the body as natural- that is contrasted against materials that are manufactured and mass-produced – exterior forces that shape the body and our idea of self. The materials blur the line between the natural and the imposed, highlighting an essential conflict in the formation of identity.
